What should a New Zealand heat pump quote include?
Units, install, pipe run and electrical each go on their own line, because the unit is the easy part — the pipe run, the electrical connection and the access carry the real cost. Specify the make, model and capacity in kW, since a 2.5kW and a 3.5kW unit price differently and the client is going to compare your quote against two others line for line. Name the pipe run length and the electrician who will do the connection, show 15% GST separately with your NZBN and IRD GST number, and state your assumptions: that the switchboard has capacity with upgrades quoted separately, and that a standard pipe run up to a stated length is allowed with additional metres charged per metre.
Who is allowed to install a heat pump in New Zealand?
It takes two competencies and it is worth showing both on the quote. The electrical connection must be completed by an electrician registered with the Electrical Workers Registration Board, who issues a Certificate of Compliance for the work, and the refrigerant side requires an appropriately qualified installer holding a filling licence. Where the pipe run passes through the building envelope you are also making a penetration in the weathertightness line, which brings in clause E2 of the Building Code, so the flashing and sealing of that penetration is work worth pricing rather than assuming. Putting the EWRB registration and the Certificate of Compliance on the quote is also a straightforward way to distinguish yourself from a cheaper quote that has quietly left the electrical work out.
Does the AI know New Zealand heat pump pricing?
Yes. Quotes are priced in NZD against current New Zealand rates — single high-wall splits, multi-head systems with two or three indoor units, whole-home ducted installs, additional refrigerant pipe run per metre, dedicated circuits and electrical work, and servicing — with 15% GST applied rather than Australia’s 10%. The language follows the market too: New Zealanders buy a heat pump rather than air conditioning, and the quote reads the way the client asked for the job.
Why do heat pump quotes get shopped around so hard, and what wins them?
Because the homeowner rings three installers and decides quickly, often during a cold snap when everyone is already booked. What wins is a quote the client can actually compare: the exact model and capacity rather than a generic unit, the pipe run length stated rather than implied, the electrical connection priced rather than assumed, and any long or awkward run named as its own line so nothing appears on the invoice that was not on the quote. A cheaper quote that omits the switchboard upgrade or the extra ten metres of pipe run is not cheaper, and an itemised quote is what lets the client see that before they choose.
