What should a New Zealand tiling quote include?
Price prep, waterproofing, tiling and grout as separate lines rather than one rate per square metre, and show 15% GST separately with your NZBN and IRD GST number. Name the tile size and finish, because a 600x600 porcelain and a mosaic feature are not the same labour job, and say who is supplying the tiles — if the client buys their own, note that shortfalls and breakages are at their cost. Allow 10% for cuts and wastage, and 15% on a diagonal or patterned layout. Then set out your exclusions: that the substrate is assumed level, sound and ready to tile, that repairs or screeding are quoted separately, and that the price is held for a stated period, since tile and adhesive pricing moves.
What are the waterproofing rules for a New Zealand bathroom?
Internal wet areas have to be waterproofed to AS/NZS 4858 and satisfy clause E3 of the Building Code, which covers internal moisture, and depending on the job and the council a producer statement may be required. That makes the membrane a priced line with a named standard, not something folded into a per-square-metre tiling rate. The substrate matters just as much: the right board behind the tiles, such as GIB Aqualine or a tile and slate board, has to be sound before any membrane goes down, which is why a retile that looks like a like-for-like swap often turns into a strip-out. Quote the membrane, the substrate and the producer statement as their own items so the client can see what they are paying for.
Does the AI know New Zealand tiling pricing?
Yes. Quotes are priced in NZD against current New Zealand rates — floor and wall lay rates, large-format and mosaic work, screeding and floor levelling, tile and adhesive removal, and wet-area waterproofing per square metre or per bathroom — with 15% GST applied rather than Australia’s 10%. Room shape moves the number as much as area does: cuts, niches and hobs slow the work, so a small awkward bathroom often costs more per square metre than a large open floor, and the AI prices the job you describe rather than applying one flat rate.
Should I quote a bathroom retile as one price or as line items?
Line items, and the strip-out is the reason. On a retile you are quoting on what you cannot see until the old tiles are off: the substrate behind them may be sound, or it may be soft GIB that has to come out and be replaced before a membrane can go anywhere near it. A single lump sum makes that discovery your loss. Quote the strip-out, the substrate replacement, the membrane and the tiling separately, state clearly what you have assumed about the substrate, and put a variation rate on the quote so the conversation about the extra work happens with an agreed price attached.
